Rain, twisty roads and Toad Rock

Keith

Well I promised Leah an easy day today and I think I’ve delivered.

We started the day out waking up from our very comfortable bed in the Best Western after a very nice sleep. We headed down to the restaurant to have our breakfast. We were lucky to have a server in training, Alex. I’ve never seen someone so lacking in confidence in my life.

Packing up the bikes we hit the road at around 10:30, it was really nice to sleep in. Heading north Leah immediately came over the intercom saying that we needed to get fuel. I looked down and saw that I only had half a tank as well. Not wanting to chance it, we headed back to Bonners Ferry for some fuel. It was kinda funny Leah suggested that at the top of the hill would probably be fuel but once again we didn’t want to chance it. Sure enough as we rode by the spot we had turned around at there was a gas station just after.

We quickly hit the boarder crossing and after answering a few questions, we were back into Canada. I immediately felt some relief as I was kinda getting USA’d out. When we left Bonners Ferry we decided to chance the weather and decided to not put on our rain gear. Almost immediately after crossing the boarder we started to feel to touch of rain. Both of us put on our gear and headed into Creston.

Our destination today was the Toad Rock Motorcycle Campground outside of Balfour on the opposite side of the lake. Due to the location we decide to pick up some beer at one of the BC beer stores in Creston. Walking into the beer store wearing our clown shoe rain covers we quickly figured out what we wanted and left. It’s amazing the difference in selection between BC stores and Alberta. They really need to remove the BS laws and allow more product from other provinces.

We hit Hwy 3A heading north to hit the Kootenay bay ferry. To any riders this is considered to be one of the best rider’s roads in BC. I don’t agree with it; while its a fun road to ride its not the best road that BC has to offer. We plan to hit the road that I consider the best road soon. Just outside Creston the rain started coming down and kept coming on and off for the entire ride up to the ferry so we just took it slow and easy.

Once we made it to the lineup for the ferry another couple of riders pulled in behind us from California. They had planned to ride out to Kamloops and I had to give then some suggestions on a route.

After crossing over it was a quick rip up the highway to reach Toad Rock. We pulled up to the bathhouse and met up with Mary the owner of the campground. As it was still raining I didn’t want to sleep in a tent so I asked Mary if she had a cabin available. We were put into a cute little cabin right beside the pavilion that even had power!

Last time we came to Toad Rock it was kinda strange as not everyone was inviting right away. This time was way different it was like we never left and we were instantly welcomed into the group. We headed back into Balfour for a bite to eat and after filling up on food we headed back to site and partied up the evening.
