Canyons, zip lines and movies in bed

Day 4 – Keith

The day started out well: a quick coffee and we packed up site very quickly on account of the little blood suckers that were floating around. After packing up we headed into the park and then south 93. Due to the fires it was absolutely quiet with very very little traffic. We stopped at Bow Lake to take a picture of the turquoise reflecting waters.

It did not take long and we found ourselves on the dreaded highway 1 going west. Traffic volume was quite light and we were planning on stopping for coffee and breakfast in Field, BC. I have to say I can’t ever remember stopping in Field anywhere beyond the rail lines.

We found this great little spot call the Truffle Pig and ordered a strong coffee and food. Everything was fantastic, with my wrap being loaded with stuff I would have never thought could be in a wrap.

After breakfast we headed back onto highway 1 to only deal with all the nonsense. I have to say while I hate the fact that the development around Golden has really changed the character of the road. I appreciate the fact that it keeps the traffic moving. We stopped in Golden to both have a pint and top off our now depreciated beer cooler at Whitetooth Brewing.

After the brewery we both figured we had the time and had heard about this Golden Skybridge. Apparently it’s not just a suspension bridge over a 400’ canyon but a kick ass zip line and all sorts of devil spawn friendly things (children). I have to say going across the bridge my high place syndrome came into full effect and I wanted to jump. The zip line on the other hand was amazing and guess what the fat guy won!

After topping off the cooler and the zip line we headed to our final destination in Glacier National Park, the Illecillewaet campground. This campground holds a special place in my heart as it was one of the camp grounds that I spent a lot of time at in my childhood. My Dad loved this campsite as he would regularly have the big fat ground squirrels eating right out of his hands.

Pulling into the campground we found a site right next to the creek beside what I hope is one of the original bridges. Setting up as we usually do it started to mist then turn to rain, then heavy rain that then petered off. Instead of making the Carbonara pasta we both decided that grilled cheese with ham would suffice.

Outside our campsite

After supper and clean up due to bears in the area and with the rain dying down we decided to explore the campground. We headed up mountain to the A.O. Wheeler hut but that was as far as we could go with the two of us unless we wanted incur the wrath of Parks Canada with a 115$ fine for hiking with only 2 people.

After finishing the tour of the campsite the rain came down a bit harder and there was a wind with it, Leah and I took shelter under to awning of the trailer and eventually decided to head in to watch a movie. Then hit the bed for a well deserved rest.
