Wow I’m 40!

Keith – Day 4

Well I guess I’ve survived 40 years and to celebrate I decided that we should try to break something. Yesterday I did that by blowing out the rear shock on my MTB, the last run of the day I felt like I was bottoming out on the rear end and Prash noticed that I had a substantial leak. I headed to the bike shop and they told me that it would be a 4 day wait to repair, so I guess I’m renting. I had the choice of a Rocky Mountain Slayer or, to upgrade to a high performance DH bike so of course I opted for the high performance bike a Divinci Wilson 29r.

Today we decided to have breakfast in the village, they have a local shop that does some amazing crepes but by the time we got to the village we found that they were closed. Instead we headed back up village to a small little place that we passed on our way down. They served wraps and breakfast bagels and I was able to have a 4 shot americano. This gave me the caffeine that I would need for the ride ahead.

I had booked my rental for 9:20, I arrived around 9:30 to collect it but found that the bike shop had forgotten to safety the bike. I patiently waited for the shop to bring me the bike and I finally got it around 10:00 and headed back to the room to suit up.

Julie and Ranak had booked a hike on the mountain so Leah, Prash and I headed up to hit the runs. I really wanted to hit Route 66 as my first run of the day. It’s a blue run that is nothing but tight bermed turns that let you keep your speed the entire way down. About mid way we hit a junction to a green run and Leah and Prash decided that they wanted something a little easier for their first run of the day. After branching off from I proceeded to bomb down the remainder of Route 66 quickly making it to the bottom. The rental bike really helped with that, I felt like I was so much faster on the rental than I was on my own bike. It’s amazing what new technology and updates can do for someone that is speed crazy.

After our first run we all decided to try out some of the runs on the bikers right hand side of the mountain and decided on hitting Mach. This was one of the scariest runs we have done to date with shale, powder and some steep root drops on a very narrow trail. After Mach we hit Spicy Taco which was far far better with some steep smooth berms. After Spicy Taco was Holy Roller to Arm Pump. Now Arm Pump was quite technical with lots of little root drops. You really had to pick your line on this run.

Our second run I really really wanted to hit Sugar. This is by far my favourite run on the mountain, a super technical and steep run that follows the a creek all the way down. We ended up only hitting the upper portion of Sugar as everyone opted to transition onto Bermalade after. This was a fast paced run that as you can guess was just full of bermed turns all the way down.

For our third run of the day Leah decided that she would take a break so Prash and I headed out. We both decided that we would start on Gummy Bear and then Canada Line the rest of the way down. Canada Line is Sun Peaks’ newest trail, super fast with great sight line and dotted with tons of jumps and tabletops. Both Prash and I were beaming after the first few minutes on this run. I’ve edited a little bit of video of Canada Line below.

After our last run we got Ranak to come out for a few more laps of the progression park to end the day.

After a well deserved shower and some time to chill out we all headed back into the village to have a bite to eat, Due to Covid and the fact that we are here mid week, there was not a lot of selection so we settled on Masa’s. I was quite surprised with the dill pickle fries they were the same size as a regular fry just made out of a pickle. After diner we headed back and after a few yawns hit the pillow for some well deserved rest.
